Evolution of Media Technology

(0:00 - 0:06) Mainstream media, popular at a time and generally accepted as part of everyday life, is constantly evolving. To gain perspective on how far technology has advanced, we must look to the past to see where it all began.

(0:06 - 0:12) Art was the mainstream media of ancient times, beginning with cave paintings. The medium eventually progressed into more artistic paintings, sculptures, and architecture. Greeks began using the experimental media of theater, which gained popularity and eventually became mainstream.

(0:12 - 0:18) In the last century, we learned how to capture real life in the form of a photograph. This technology gave way to motion pictures, a new extension of theater. Also making its debut was the radio, transmitting scheduled audio shows and broadcasts to anyone who tuned in.

(0:18 - 0:24) Following on the heels of motion pictures and radio was television; first in black and white, and eventually in color. Video tapes and audio cassettes were created as media distribution. Now you could watch movies and listen to music at your leisure!

(0:24 - 0:30) These technologies continue to develop in modern times. Televisions are now remarkably thin and can support high-definition and 3D imagery. Video tapes have been replaced by DVDs and Blu-Ray, and audio cassettes have been replaced with CDs and digital MP3s. Who knows where technology will bring us next?
