Some of the atmosphere’s absorbed energy powers the earth’s water cycle. The sun begins the cycle by heating ocean water. The water evaporates, and vapor rises into the atmosphere. This vapor forms clouds, which are carried inland by the wind. Rain or snow falls from the clouds onto land. This surface runoff is then drained off land into rivers and the ocean.
