Brake systems bring together mechanical and hydraulic components. Pressing the brake pedal causes the mechanical linkage to move the piston in the master cylinder. The moving piston forces the brake fluid out of the cylinder. The hydraulic pressure the brake fluid creates moves the piston in the wheel cylinder out, forcing the brake shoe against the brake drum in the wheel.
