The Rule of Nines
The rule of nines estimates the extent of burned tissue on a patient's body. According to this rule, the percentage of total body surface area covered by burns is broken down as follows: 9 percent for the anterior and posterior head and neck, 18 percent for the anterior torso, 18 percent for the posterior torso, 9 percent for the anterior and posterior right arm, 9 percent for the anterior and posterior left arm, 18 percent for the anterior and posterior right leg, 18 percent for the anterior and posterior left leg, and 1 percent for the genital area. Together, these add up to 100 percent of the total body surface.
