Today, at 12:30 p.m., Tony complained of pain and requested more pain medication. He was not due for another dose until 2:00 p.m. When you explained this, the patient responded with anger and annoyance. He said that he “demanded to see the doctor.” At 1:00 p.m., you notified Dr. Jones, your supervisor, of the patient’s request and anger. At 1:45 p.m., Dr. Jones came to see Tony and assess his condition. Tony repeated his request for more pain medication and described his pain as “getting worse.” Vital signs were normal. Dr. Jones reported that he could not prescribe a higher dose of pain medication. When you checked on Tony at 3:00 p.m., he seemed calmer. Dinner was served at 5:30 p.m. Patient did not eat.
