By law, infants must travel in a car seat every time they ride in a vehicle. Car seats reduce the chances for serious injury and death among children. A newborn should be placed in a rear-facing car seat in the back seat of the vehicle. Children seated in the front seat can be killed or severely injured if an air bag deploys. Parents should always check with their state’s laws and guidelines regarding car seats. Parents can visit local fire or police stations with questions—many of them perform car seat inspections to ensure correct installation.
