Read the passage below and then answer the questions.

Toddlers enjoy watching other children play and like playing near other children. This type of play is called parallel play because it is neither cooperative nor interactive. Toddlers do not easily share toys, especially their favorite ones.

Because toddlers cannot understand empathy yet, they do not understand that they can hurt another child's feelings when fighting over toys, causing friction. While this behavior may seem selfish, it is perfectly normal and common. Toddlers need guidance and occasional intervention from caregivers to learn how to handle conflict with others.
