Traumatic life experiences that can trigger a mental disorder include the following:
- the death of a loved one
- divorce
- significant family conflict
- financial pressures
- moving or changing jobs or schools
- abuse or neglect
- substance abuse
Recovery from traumatic experiences may take a few weeks or months, but the effects may also last longer.
