Read the passage below and then answer the questions.

Environmental factors are events and stressors that occur in a person’s life and may contribute to the development of a mental disorder. Some experts believe that traumatic life events and stressors can trigger the development of a mental disorder in people who are genetically vulnerable to it.

Traumatic life experiences that can trigger a mental disorder include the following:

  • the death of a loved one
  • divorce
  • significant family conflict
  • financial pressures
  • moving or changing jobs or schools
  • abuse or neglect
  • substance abuse

Recovery from traumatic experiences may take a few weeks or months, but the effects may also last longer.
