Preventing Dangerous Situations
School violence can include bullying, cyberbullying, fighting, and the use of weapons at school. Many schools establish violence-prevention programs to help create a culture that has zero tolerance for violent behaviors. Students have an important role in school strategies for violence prevention.
Strong, positive, responsible students can be selected as leaders at their schools. These students act appropriately at school and are not afraid to speak out against violence. These students can set an example for other students at school for not tolerating violent behavior.
Students can participate in positive team-building activities, such as community service work, to forge bonds with their peers.
A buddy system can provide an opportunity for older students to look out for younger students.
Students should immediately report any violent activity they observe. This includes seeing or hearing about a weapon, a violent act, one student threatening another, a suspicious person in the school, or any plans for violence. When students quickly alert adults to violent behavior, adults can prevent or stop dangerous situations.
Schools can also offer peer mediation programs to help students resolve their conflicts before they escalate to violence.
