Using a Fire Extinguisher
When confronted with fire, it is important to remember that fire extinguishers are designed to put out small, contained fires. If a fire is spreading rapidly, you should evacuate the premises and allow the fire department to fight the fire.
If the fire is localized or contained, a fire extinguisher can be effective when used properly. Always position yourself so that there is an exit at your back for escape. Use the acronym P-A-S-S to remember the steps for using a fire extinguisher correctly. P-A-S-S stands for pull, aim, squeeze, and sweep.
The first step is to Pull the pin at the top of the fire extinguisher. The fire extinguisher will not work if the pin is still in place.
Next, Aim the fire extinguisher at the base of the flames. The base of the fire is where the material that is fueling the fire is located. Aiming the fire extinguisher at the flames is ineffective.
Squeeze the handle of the extinguisher to spray.
While squeezing the handle, sweep the extinguisher repeatedly back and forth across the base of the fire.
Continue to spray after the fire is extinguished to prevent the fire from restarting.
Monitor the extinguished fire closely in case it reignites.
