Emotions
Your emotions are the moods or feelings you experience. Emotions are a normal part of life and can be pleasant or unpleasant. Pleasant emotions make you feel good.
Some examples of pleasant emotions include: happy, loved, kind, grateful, excited, cheerful, proud, hopeful, and joyful. Unpleasant emotions make you feel bad. Some examples of unpleasant emotions include: angry, scared, disgusted, jealous, helpless, lonely, guilty, rejected, and sad.
As you experience life, you may feel pleasant and unpleasant emotions at the same time. For example, when school lets out for summer vacation, you may feel happy because you will not have to do homework. But you may also feel sad because you will not see some of your friends every day anymore.
You may frequently experience more than one kind of pleasant or unpleasant emotion at the same time. When you get your report card at the end of the year and find out that you scored straight A’s, you might feel proud, happy, and joyful all at the same time.
Sometimes, understanding emotions can be difficult. One emotion may cover or hide another emotion. If your friend starts spending time with someone other than you, you may feel angry at your friend. Your anger, however, might only be a result of another emotion, such as loneliness, fear of losing your friend, or jealousy.
Understanding your emotions involves knowing which emotions you feel and why. When you can understand these things, you have emotional awareness. You can use emotional awareness to control your emotions instead of simply reacting to them.
