The Sense of Smell
The sense of smell is known as olfaction. Olfaction interprets airborne molecules that enter the nasal cavity and come in contact with the olfactory bulb. The information gathered by the olfactory bulb is then transmitted to the brain via the olfactory nerve.
Aromas can also reach the olfactory bulb through the retronasal pathway. As food is chewed and swallowed in the mouth, aromas are pushed into the nasal cavity.
