What Is Play?

(0:00 - 0:04): The word "play" can have many different meanings, depending on the activities involved and the ages of those in context.

(0:05 - 0:09): Playing to engage means to amuse yourself by doing something fun and interesting.

(0:10 - 0:16): Play is to participate or cooperate with another in a fun endeavor. To adults, this form of play may mean to participate in an activity that has rules and objectives, like the stock market.

(0:17 - 0:18): Play is fantasy, wherein imagination is used to create something that is not real. Objects can be imagined as play objects to take on the physical form of a fantasy.

(0:19 - 0:20): Play is structure, as in an activity with a goal or purpose. This includes sports and other forms of formal recreational activity.

(0:21 - 0:22): Play is being foolish: goofing or fooling around. It is also pretend, meaning the action is not serious (like "play fighting" in a video game).

(0:22 - 0:23): Play is theater; a dramatic performance or show. Play is also to perform or take on a part, such as a character in a dramatic play or a particular role on a design team.

(0:24 - 0:28): Play is important in life to balance the amount of stress from work and everyday environments. Playing video games can be a fun and calming form of stress relief.
