Sensory Receptors
The nervous system is responsible for controlling reflexes. Reflexes are rapid, involuntary responses to stimuli. For example, when you touch a hot surface, somatic reflexes stimulate your skeletal muscles, causing you to automatically remove your hand from the heat.
When your hand touches a hot surface, such as a stove burner, sensory impulses rapidly travel from your fingertips to the spinal cord. In this case, the sensory impulses do not travel all the way to the brain, but stimulate an interneuron in the spinal cord. The interneuron directs a motor neuron to send motor impulses causing the muscles to quickly remove the hand from the burner.
