Formation of a Pimple
Many teenagers experience acne, a skin disease that causes pimples. Pimples develop when pores, or hair follicles, become clogged with oil. Your pores contain sebaceous glands, which produce an oily substance called sebum. Sebum helps keep your hair and skin from drying out. As the outer layer of the skin is shed, dead skin cells may become stuck inside of a pore by mixing with the sebum. This creates a blockage, or plug, in the pore. Over time, oil and bacteria enter the pore, causing infection, redness, swelling, and pus. The infected plug emerges from the skin and forms a pimple.
