Characteristics of Effective Team Members
When working toward a solution for a problem, individuals with well-rounded skills are an asset to a team. Each individual team member should possess the following skills:
Critical-thinking skills. Successful team members have the ability to interpret and make reasonable judgments by analyzing a situation and applying a solution.
Verbal Skills. The ability to communicate effectively using spoken or written words is a necessity for effective team members.
Nonverbal skills. When working in teams, it is important to have the ability to communicate effectively using body language, eye contact, touch, personal space, behavior, and attitude.
Listening skills. The ability of an individual to hear what a person says, as well as understand what is being said, is a key team member characteristic.
Collaboration skills. Being able to work together to achieve a common goal is important when working with others.
Time management skills. Effective team members are skilled in the practice of organizing time and work assignments to increase personal efficiency.
